While there is a historical subdivision known as Merindad de Uribe (or Uribealdea) in the Basque Country of Spain, it is distinct from the Colombian city. The Spanish region historically contained most municipalities currently within the Greater Bilbao metropolitan area, including Bilbao and parts of the Estuary of Bilbao.
