Rivera is a city located in the Rivera Department of Uruguay. It serves as the capital of the department and is situated along Route 5.
The city is notable for its proximity to the Brazilian border, where it joins with the Brazilian city of Santana do Livramento. These two cities are separated by only one block at the north end of Route 5, creating a combined urban area of approximately 200,000 inhabitants. As of the 2011 census, Rivera was ranked as the sixth most populated city in Uruguay.
