Istmina is a small city and municipality located in the Chocó Department of Colombia. It is situated approximately 75 kilometers from the departmental capital, Quibdó. The municipality covers an area of 1,880 square kilometers with an average elevation of 79 meters and an average temperature of 26.7 °C.
Founded in 1834 by Juan Nepomuceno Mosquera, the city was originally named San Pablo before being renamed Istmina in 1903. The current name is a contraction of "isthmus" and "minas" (mines), reflecting two primary geographical and industrial characteristics of the region.
