Timbio is a town and municipality located in the Cauca Department of Colombia. It is situated approximately 16 kilometers south of Popayán, which serves as the capital city of the department.
The Hispanic foundation of Timbio occurred on November 1, 1535. Captains Juan de Ampudia and Pedro Añasco established a church to commemorate the Christian holiday of All Saints under orders from Sebastian de Belalcázar. The site was chosen for its proximity to Mastales, where Spanish conquistadors defeated the people of Pubenza and Pambía in a battle resulting in approximately 3,000 deaths.
Timbio is recognized as the third oldest municipality in Colombia settled by the Spaniards.
