Popayán is the capital city of the Colombian department of Cauca. It is situated in southwestern Colombia within the Pubenza Valley, positioned between the Western Mountain Range and the Central Mountain Range.

The municipality covers an area of 483 km² and has a population of 318,059. Located at an elevation of 1,760 meters above sea level, the city maintains an average temperature of 18 °C.
