Puerto Rico, officially known as the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, is a self-governing Caribbean archipelago and island organized as an unincorporated territory of the United States. It is situated approximately 1,000 miles (1,600 km) southeast of Miami, Florida, positioned between the Dominican Republic in the Greater Antilles and the U.S. Virgin Islands in the Lesser Antilles.
The territory consists of a main island along with several smaller islands, including Vieques, Culebra, and Mona. It has a population of approximately 3.2 million people divided into 78 municipalities. San Juan serves as the capital municipality and is the most populous area within the territory.
While Spanish predominates in daily life, both Spanish and English are the official languages of the government. The region's geography and political status define its identity as a key Caribbean destination under U.S. jurisdiction.
