Fortul is one of the seven municipalities located within the Colombian department of Arauca. It was officially founded on January 7, 1920. The municipality shares borders with Saravena to the north, Tame to the south, Arauquita to the east, and Güicán to the west.
According to a 2005 census conducted by the DANE, Fortul had a total population of 25,379 inhabitants. Of this population, 13,081 residents live in the municipal seat. The demographic breakdown for the municipality shows a distribution of 49.5% women and 50.5% men.
