Hispania was the historical Roman name for the Iberian Peninsula. Under the governance of the Roman Republic, the territory was divided into two distinct provinces known as Hispania Citerior and Hispania Ulterior.
During the period of the Roman Empire under the Principate, the administrative boundaries were reorganized. Hispania Ulterior was subdivided into the provinces of Baetica and Lusitania, while Hispania Citerior was restructured as Hispania Tarraconensis.
