Caracolillo, also known as peaberry, is a specific type of coffee bean produced by the coffee plant. While the fruit of the coffee plant, commonly referred to as a cherry, typically contains two seeds with flattened facing sides, caracolillos occur when only one of the two seeds is fertilized.
Because there is no second seed to flatten it, the single caracolillo bean develops into an oval shape. This variety typically accounts for approximately 5% of all coffee beans harvested.
