Zhìshēng was a Chinese Buddhist monk and bibliographer who lived during the Tang dynasty. While specific biographical details regarding his life are limited, he is known to have entered the monkhood early in his life to study Mahayana and Theravada doctrines, with a particular focus on the Vinaya.
He is most recognized for authoring the Catalogue of Śākyamuṇi’s Teachings of the Kaiyuan Era of the Great Tang Era, also known as the Kaiyuan Catalogue (T2154), which he completed in 730 CE. This work was significant because its organization established the basic structure of the Chinese Buddhist Tripiṭaka. It is widely considered the most important bibliographical catalogue in the history of East Asian Buddhist canonical publications.
