Wanzhou District is a major urban area located in the upper reaches of the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River in China. It currently serves as the second most populated urban core of the Chongqing Municipality, situated along the border of Sichuan province to the northwest and Hubei province to the southeast.
The district was formerly known by the names Wanxian or Wan County. Before it became part of the direct-controlled municipality of Chongqing, Wanzhou was a constituent part of Sichuan province. The urban core of the district is located approximately 228 km (142 mi) from the city proper of Chongqing.
