Huiwen is a historical figure recognized as the first patriarch of the Tiantai Buddhist School in China. He originated from the Gao family, which was located in the current Bohai region of Shandong province during the Northern Qi Dynasty. This dynasty ruled northeast China between 550 and 577.
Huiwen is notable for his specific religious doctrine regarding the "simultaneity of the mind in the three wisdoms." This teaching was subsequently expanded upon by his disciple, Huìsī, who developed the concept of "simultaneity of the minds in the three consciousnesses."
