Puning, officially Puning City, is a county-level city in eastern Guangdong Province, China. It operates under the administration of Jieyang, though it possesses economic administrative power comparable to that of prefecture-level cities. Geographically, the city is situated on the west rim of the Chaoshan Plain, bordering the Lianhua Mountains to its southwest. Approximately 90 percent of its territory lies south of the Tropic of Cancer.
The city is notable for its significant population metrics and cultural heritage. It holds a population of 2.5089 million under the household registration system (hukou), which is the largest among all county-level cities in China. Puning also serves as a major ancestral hometown, representing 1.95 million overseas Chinese people and 1.4 million returned overseas Chinese residents and their family members.
