Meihua refers to the flowers of the Prunus mume tree, commonly known as the Chinese plum or plum blossom. While often called a plum in English, the species is botanically classified within the Armeniaca section of the genus Prunus, which identifies it as an apricot.
These flowers are notable for blooming during the late winter and early spring, specifically around the time of the Spring Festival. Because they are among the first to bloom despite the cold weather, meihua are significant cultural symbols of endurance and are recognized as one of the Three Friends of Winter.
