Chiwen is a traditional Chinese roof ornamental motif and a figure in Chinese mythology. In mythology, it is identified as one of the nine sons of the dragon, characterized by physical features that combine those of a fish with a dragon.
In architecture and art, Chiwen serves as an imperial roof decoration or waterspout. While they are functionally comparable to Western gargoyles, they are not related to the mythological character in terms of origin. These ornaments are commonly found on traditional Chinese buildings.
