Changshan refers to a traditional form of paofu, or Chinese robe, which originated from the qizhuang of the Qing dynasty. This garment was specifically associated with the traditional dress of the Manchu people and was primarily worn by men.
The style was developed by Han Chinese who modified their own Ming dynasty Hanfu by incorporating specific elements from Manchu male clothing to create the hanfu changshan. Functionally, the changshan is recognized as the male equivalent of the women's cheongsam and was frequently worn in combination with a magua, which is commonly translated as a riding jacket.
