Kunming is the capital and largest city of Yunnan province in China. It serves as the primary political, economic, communications, and cultural center of the region, while also functioning as a major tourism hub within the country.
The city is famously nicknamed the "City of Eternal Spring" due to its mild climate throughout the year. Historically, Kunming served as an important military center during World War II, housing the headquarters for the U.S. Army Forces China-Burma-British Raj and acting as a transport terminus for the Burma Road.
During the war, Wujiaba Airport in Kunming was the home base for the First American Volunteer Group (AVG) of the Republic of China Air Force, which was known by the nickname "Flying Tigers."
