Xianyang is a prefecture-level city located in central Shaanxi province, China. It is situated on the Wei River, positioned just a few kilometers upstream to the west of the provincial capital, Xi'an.
Historically, the old Xianyang city served as the capital of the Qin dynasty, making it the first imperial capital of China. Today, the city is integrated into the Greater Xi'an Metropolitan Area, which is one of the primary megalopolises in northwestern China.
The city covers a total area of 10,213 square kilometers. According to the 2010 census, its built-up area, which consists of two urban districts, had a population of 945,420 inhabitants.
