Nanshe was a Mesopotamian goddess associated with various environments and social functions. She was primarily linked to the sea and marshlands, as well as the animals that inhabited these biomes, specifically birds and fish. Her roles extended into administrative and spiritual spheres, including divination, dream interpretation, justice, social welfare, and certain administrative tasks.
In Mesopotamian mythology, Nanshe was regarded as a daughter of Enki and a sister of Ningirsu. She was married to Nindara, a figure who remains relatively unknown in historical records. Her divine circle included her daughter Nin-MAR.KI, along with other deities such as Hendursaga, Dumuzi-abzu, and Shul-utula. In the city of Ur, she was incorporated into the circle of Ningal, while in various incantations, she appeared alongside Ningirima or Nammu.
