Guan Yu, also known by the courtesy name Yunchang, was a prominent Chinese military general who served under the warlord Liu Bei during the late Eastern Han dynasty. He is historically recognized for his significant role in the events leading to the end of the Han dynasty and the subsequent establishment of the state of Shu Han during the Three Kingdoms period.
Known for his loyalty to Liu Bei, Guan Yu accompanied him on many early exploits and shared a brotherly relationship with Zhang Fei. He served as a governor in Jing Province starting in 214, where he defended the area for approximately seven years. His military career included notable actions such as slaying Yan Liang at the Battle of Boma and fighting against Cao Cao's forces at the Battle of Fancheng.
Following his defeat at Fancheng, Guan Yu was captured in an ambush by the forces of Sun Quan after the breach of the Sun–Liu alliance. He was ultimately executed at Linju, Xiangyang Commandery. He remains a significant historical figure noted for both his military service and his personal character.
