Fenghuang refers to mythological birds that appear in various traditions throughout the Sinosphere. These creatures are understood to reign over all other types of birds.
While males and females were originally distinguished as feng and huang respectively, a gender distinction is typically no longer made today. Fenghuang are generally considered a feminine entity and are often paired with the traditionally masculine Chinese dragon.
