Puxi is the historic center of Shanghai, China. It serves as a major residential and commercial hub, currently housing approximately 48% of the city's total population within an area of 288 km2.
The district is geographically defined by its position to the west of the Huangpu River. It is distinguished from the Pudong district, which lies to its east across the river.
