Panjin is a coastal prefecture-level city located in central Liaoning province, People's Republic of China. It is situated on the northern shore of the Liaodong Bay and shares borders with Anshan to the east, Yingkou to the southeast, and Jinzhou to the west and north.
The city is characterized by its small geographic and demographic scale relative to its region. It is the smallest city in both Liaoning province and all of Northeast China, covering an administrative area of 3,825 square kilometres. As of the 2020 census, it was also the least populous city in Liaoning with a population of 1,389,691 people residing within its built-up area.
The urban landscape of Panjin consists of two urban districts and the counties of Dawa and Panshan. These areas are currently undergoing a process of conurbation to form a larger continuous built-up region.
