Liupanshui is a prefecture-level city located in the western region of Guizhou province in the People's Republic of China. The name of the city is derived from the first character of its three constituent counties: Liuzhi, Panzhou, and Shuicheng.
Covering an area of 9,926 square kilometres (3,832 sq mi), Liupanshui was the second largest city in Guizhou province as of 2006. While the total population exceeded 2,830,000 at that time, only 251,900 inhabitants were classified as urban residents.
The city is locally recognized by the nicknames "The Cool City" or "Cool Capital." These titles refer to its geographic climate, specifically its notably low average summer temperatures.
