Yining, also known as Ghulja or Kulja, is a county-level city located in northwestern Xinjiang, China. It serves as the administrative seat and largest city of the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture. The city is currently ranked as the third largest city in the Xinjiang region, following Ürümqi and Korla.
The city was established by Erdeni Batur Khong Tayiji of the Dzungar Khanate. It stands as the modern successor to the nearby ruined city of Almaliq, which is located in Huocheng County.
