Shanshan was an ancient kingdom situated in western China. It was located at the northeastern edge of the Taklamakan Desert, positioned near the large salt lake known as Lop Nur, which is currently mostly dry.
Historically significant for its geographical location along trade routes, Shanshan served as a regional center in the arid desert landscape of the Tarim Basin.
