Kashgar, also known as Kashi, is a city located in the Tarim Basin region of southern Xinjiang, China. It stands as one of the country's westernmost cities, situated near the borders of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. With a population of 711,300 people, the city occupies an urban area of 15 km2 (5.8 sq mi), while its total administrative area extends over 555 km2 (214 sq mi).
The city is recognized as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. For more than 2,000 years, it has served as a strategically important oasis on the Silk Road, facilitating trade and cultural exchange between China, Central Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
