Ghulja, also known as Yining or Kulja, is a county-level city located in northwestern Xinjiang, China. It serves as the administrative seat and largest city within the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture. The city holds the rank of the third largest urban center in the Xinjiang region, following Ürümqi and Korla.
The modern city of Ghulja is the successor to the nearby ruined city of Almaliq, situated in Huocheng County. It was originally established by Erdeni Batur Khong Tayiji of the Dzungar Khanate.
