The Wudang Mountains are a mountain range located in the northwestern part of Hubei Province, China. They serve as an important destination for Taoist pilgrimages and are recognized as one of the "Four Sacred Mountains of Taoism" within the country.
The region is home to a famous complex of Taoist temples and monasteries associated with Xuantian Shangdi, known as the Lord of the North. These sites are renowned for the practice of Taoism and tai chi, which serve as the Taoist counterpart to the Shaolin Monastery's affiliation with Chan Buddhism.
The architectural achievements and religious significance of these structures, including the Wudang Garden, led to their designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. The mountains remain a primary center for traditional Chinese spiritual practices and historical architecture.
