The Tunbao, also known as the Tunpu, are an ethnic subgroup of the Han Chinese people residing primarily in the Guizhou and Yunnan provinces of China. Although they were historically categorized as a non-Han ethnic minority, anthropological research conducted by Torii Ryuzo in 1896 confirmed their origins as ethnic Han.
The group is descended from Han soldiers who were part of an expedition sent to Guizhou during the reign of the Ming dynasty's Hongwu Emperor. Because of this historical migration, the Tunbao have preserved significant cultural elements, including their traditional costumes and language, which date back to the Ming era.
