Jinshi refers to the highest and final degree awarded in the imperial examination system of Imperial China. Often conducted within the palace in the imperial capital, this specific level of certification was also known as the Metropolitan Exam.
Recipients of the Jinshi degree were distinguished scholars who achieved the pinnacle of the academic hierarchy. In various English-language sources, these individuals are commonly referred to as Imperial Scholars.
