The Changtang is a high-altitude region located on the Tibetan Plateau in western and northern Tibet. Its geography extends into the southern edges of Xinjiang as well as the Changthang district in southeastern Ladakh, India. The landscape is characterized by highlands and various lakes.
Stretching approximately 1,600 kilometres (990 mi) east from eastern Ladakh into Tibet, the region reaches as far as modern Qinghai. It serves as a primary home for the Changpa, a nomadic Tibetan people. The two largest settlements within the Tibetan portion of the Changtang are Rutog Town, which serves as the seat of Rutog County, and Domar Township, the seat of Shuanghu County.
