Hegang is a prefecture-level city located in the Heilongjiang province of China. It is situated in the southeastern section of the Lesser Khingan Range, positioned across from Jiamusi to the south by the Songhua River and facing Russia's Jewish Autonomous Oblast to the north across the Amur River.
The city covers an administrative area of 14,679.88 km2 (5,667.93 sq mi) and is recognized as one of the principal coal-producing cities in China. According to data from the 2020 Chinese census, the city had a population of 891,271 inhabitants, with 545,404 residing within its six urban districts. By the end of 2024, the total registered population was estimated at approximately 935,000, including 756,000 people living in urban areas.
