Hotan is a major oasis town located in southwestern Xinjiang, which is an autonomous region in northwestern China. The city serves as the seat of the Hotan Prefecture.
The city proper became its own independent administrative area in August 1984 after breaking off from the larger Hotan County. It remains a significant regional center within the Xinjiang province.
