Maoshan

China

Maoshan is a city located in China. It serves as a significant geographical site associated with Daoist religious history and practice.

The mountain near Nanjing, known as Maoshan, is recognized as the principal seat of the Shangqing School (also known as Supreme Clarity, Highest Clarity, or Supreme Purity). This Daoist movement originated during the aristocracy of the Western Jin dynasty. The school's foundation was established through revelations received by its first leader, Wei Huacun, and was later structured into a formal theory and canon by Tao Hongjing near the end of the 5th century.
