Lianyungang is a prefecture-level city located in the northeastern region of Jiangsu province, China. It serves as a coastal hub situated along the coastline of the East China Sea, bordering several other administrative regions including Yancheng to the southeast, Huai'an and Suqian to the south, Xuzhou to the southwest, and the province of Shandong to the north.
The city's name is derived from three distinct geographical features: Lian Island, which is the largest island in Jiangsu province; Yuntai Mountain, the highest peak in the province located a few miles from the city center; and its status as a port. The name can be literally translated as "the Port Connecting the Clouds."
