The fangxiang is an organized-suspended (bianxuan) Chinese metallophone that has a history of use spanning over 1,000 years. It was first utilized during the Liang dynasty, which lasted from 502 to 557 CE.
Following its initial appearance, the instrument was standardized during the Sui and Tang dynasties. During these periods, it was primarily employed for court music.
