Wanhu

China

Wan Hu is an alleged Chinese official who is historically described as possibly being the first person to attempt a launch into outer space using a rocket. Due to this legendary feat, he has been credited by modern sources as potentially being the world's first astronaut and the "first martyr in man's struggle to achieve space flight."

In recognition of his reported actions, the International Astronomical Union named the crater Wan-Hoo on the far side of the Moon after him in 1970.
