Shangrao is a medium-sized prefecture-level city situated in the northeastern region of Jiangxi province, China. It serves as a geographical crossroads, bordering Anhui province to the north, Zhejiang province to the east, and Fujian province to the south. The western portion of the city extends into Poyang Lake.
As of the 2020 census, Shangrao had a total population of 6,491,088 residents. Of this population, 1,293,399 live within the built-up area comprised of the Xinzhou and Guangxin districts, while the Guangfeng District remains non-conurbated. Linguistically, the city is located at the western edge of Wu-speaking areas, though most of its associated counties speak Gan.
