The gaohu is a Chinese bowed string instrument that belongs to the huqin family, which also includes the zhonghu, erhu, banhu, jinghu, and sihu. Its name translates to "high-pitched huqin." The instrument was developed in the 1920s from the erhu by the musician and composer Lü Wencheng.
The gaohu serves as the leading instrument for Cantonese music and Cantonese opera ensembles. Notable musical pieces performed on the gaohu include Bu Bu Gao and Ping Hu Qiu Yue.
