Xiangxi refers to the Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, an autonomous prefecture located in northwestern Hunan province, China. The region serves as a primary administrative area characterized by its diverse cultural landscape and specific geographical location within the province.
The prefecture is composed of one city, Jishou, which serves as the capital, along with seven counties: Baojing, Fenghuang, Guzhang, Huayuan, Longshan, Luxi, and Yongshun. The population of the region totals approximately 2,480,000 residents.
A defining characteristic of Xiangxi is its demographic composition, as ethnic minorities make up 66.6% of the population. These residents represent 25 different ethnic groups, with the Tujia and Miao being the most prominent, totaling 860,000 and 790,000 people respectively.
