Pingyao, officially known as Pingyao Ancient City, is a walled city located in central Shanxi, China. It is situated within Pingyao County in the Jinzhong prefecture and administratively comprises the town of Gutao.
The city is renowned for its significant role in Chinese economic history and its well-preserved urban planning and architecture from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Notably, it is the only walled city seat in China that survives with its Ming–Qing layout substantially complete.
