Bihu is a significant cultural festival unique to the Indian state of Assam. It consists of three distinct types: Rongali (or Bohag Bihu), Kongali (or Kati Bihu), and Bhogali (or Magh Bihu). These festivals represent an intricate admixture of Tibeto-Burman, Austroasiatic, and Indo-Aryan traditions contributed by all communities within the state.
The three types of Bihu are observed at different times of the year to mark specific seasonal transitions. Rongali Bihu is celebrated in April as a spring festival and is considered the most important of the three. Bhogali Bihu takes place in January as a harvest festival characterized by community feasts, while Kongali Bihu occurs in October or November as a somber, thrifty animistic festival reflecting a season of short supplies.
