The Pingpu people are a group of indigenous peoples originally residing in the lowland regions of Taiwan. They are distinguished from Highland indigenous peoples by their geographic distribution and historical settlement patterns. Rather than forming a single ethnic group, the Pingpu consist of approximately eight to twelve individual tribes or groups.
Members of the Austronesian family, the Pingpu people have been significantly influenced by external forces since the 17th century, including Dutch, Spanish, and Han Chinese colonization. Due to these historical interactions, they have undergone extensive assimilation into Han Chinese language and culture. Consequently, it is often difficult to distinguish Pingpu individuals from Taiwanese Han people without careful inspection.
