Huainan is a prefecture-level city located in north-central Anhui province, China. According to the 2020 census, the city has a population of 3,033,528 inhabitants. It derives its name from the Han-era Principality of Huainan and serves as one of the core cities within the Hefei Metropolitan Circle.
The city borders several neighboring regions, including the provincial capital of Hefei to the south, Lu'an to the southwest, Fuyang to the west, Bozhou to the northwest, Bengbu to the northeast, and Chuzhou to the east. Its urbanized area consists of four districts and Fengtai County.
Huainan is primarily known for its coal industry and thermal power plants. Additionally, it is historically recognized as the hometown and birthplace of tofu. The city's official symbols include the Chinese rose as its flower and the Old-World Plane Tree as its tree.
