Santiago, also known as Santiago de Chile, is the capital and largest city of Chile. It is one of the most significant urban centers in the Americas, serving as the primary anchor for the Santiago Metropolitan Region.
The city is situated within the Santiago Basin in the Chilean Central Valley, positioned between the Andes mountains to the east and the Chilean Coastal Range to the west. Most of the urban area lies at an elevation between 500 and 650 meters above sea level, with recent expansion reaching into the Andean foothills.
The conurbation of Greater Santiago comprises more than forty communes. This region is a major economic hub, concentrating approximately 45% of Chile's GDP and over one-third of the national population.
