Coquimbo is a port city, commune, and capital of the Elqui Province located in the Coquimbo Region of Chile. It is situated along the Pan-American Highway in a valley approximately 10 kilometers south of La Serena. Together with La Serena, the city forms Greater La Serena, an urban area with a population exceeding 400,000 inhabitants.
The commune covers an area of roughly 1,429.3 square kilometers centered around its harbor. The region is characterized by a low precipitation rate and an average temperature of approximately 14 °C (57 °F).
