Lautaro was a young Mapuche toqui who became a prominent leader of indigenous resistance against Spanish conquest in Chile. He is historically significant for developing the military tactics that were subsequently employed by the Mapuche people during the long-running Arauco War.
He is widely revered among both Mapuche and non-Mapuche Chileans as a symbol of resistance against foreign conquest, servitude, and cruelty.
