Locarno is a town and municipality located in the canton of Ticino in southern Switzerland. It is situated at the northeastern tip of Lake Maggiore on its northern shore, positioned at the southern foot of the Swiss Alps.
The municipality has a proper population of approximately 16,000 people. When including the agglomeration of Locarno—which encompasses the town of Ascona and several other neighboring municipalities—the total population reaches about 56,000.
