Fribourg, also known as Freiburg, is the capital city of the Swiss canton of Fribourg and the district of La Sarine. Situated on the Swiss Plateau, the city is positioned on both sides of the river Saane (Sarine). It serves as a significant economic, administrative, and educational hub located on the cultural border between French-speaking and German-speaking Switzerland.

The city features an Old City that is recognized as one of the best-maintained in Switzerland. This historic area is situated on a small rocky hill overlooking the valley of the Sarine river. As of 2018, the population of Fribourg was 38,365.
